Virgilio Villoresi (1979, Florence, Italy) is an Italian filmmaker and visual artist who combines cinema, animation, and craftsmanship into a highly personal and recognizable language. His work emerges from a deep dialogue with the historical avant-gardes, experimental cinema, and auteur animation, with references ranging from Maya Deren to Kenneth Anger, Patrick Bokanowski to Jan Lenica, Jean Cocteau to Paolo Gioli. In 2005 he directed Frigidaire, a stop motion and animated collage short that marked the beginning of his handcrafted approach to image-making. His work centers on manual processes, optical illusions, and in-camera effects, rejecting CGI. In 2021 he founded Fantasmagoria in Milan. In 2025 he completed Orfeo, a 16mm feature blending live-action and stop motion, premiered out of competition at the Venice Film Festival to critical acclaim.
